My Key Broke Off in the Lock – Now What?

What has actually happened

The key sheared at its thinnest point, usually the shoulder, and the blade is sitting on the pin stack. At that moment the lock is undamaged. Nearly all the expensive damage happens in the next ten minutes. What follows is usually straightforward, drawing the fragment back out of the keywayand only rarely does the plug need replacing afterwards.

Stop touching it. Extraction usually takes ten to twenty minutes and costs $50 to $200, and the cylinder is normally saved. What closes that cheap option is pliers, glue or force, all of which drive the fragment deeper and score the plug.

Why keys snap here more in winter

Two things at once. Cold makes metal brittle and stiffens the lubricant so the cylinder resists, and the key resisting is often a worn copy already. A key duplicated several times is thin at the shoulder, and that is where it goes.

What extraction involves

Spiral and hook extractors grip the fragment and draw it back along the keyway without bending pins or scoring the plug. Then the cylinder gets cleaned and lubricated, because the stiffness that broke the key is still there.

The new key should not be a copy

We decode the cylinder or read the bitting from the pieces and cut a fresh key to the original specification. A key copied from a worn one inherits the wear and breaks again.

The Short Version

  • Do not use pliers or glue.
  • Extraction is usually cheap and saves the cylinder.
  • Cold plus a worn copy is the classic Boone cause.
  • Get the new key cut to code, not copied.
