Panic Bars & Storefront Doors: What Boone Gets Wrong
Why it matters beyond convenience
A rear exit that does not latch is both a security problem and a fire-code one. It is also the kind of thing an insurance inspection notices, usually at the worst possible moment. Most of it is adjustment rather than replacement, which is the same diagnosis we run on any dragging door, done as part of after-hours work on trading premises.
Most rear-exit problems in Boone are alignment, not hardware. Timber and metal frames move through the freeze-thaw cycle, the latch stops meeting the strike, and the door drags. Adjusting the strike and the closer usually costs an hour of labour against several hundred dollars for a new device.
What actually fails
Closers lose tension. Strikes wear oval. Frames shift with the seasons. Thresholds swell. Each of those presents as “the panic bar is broken” and none of them are the panic bar.
When the device genuinely needs replacing
When the dogging mechanism no longer holds, the touchpad has lost travel, or the unit is visibly deformed. Then it is a replacement, and it should be shown to you rather than asserted.
Storefront door faults and fixes
| Symptom | Usual cause | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Door does not latch | Strike out of alignment | Strike adjustment |
| Door slams or fails to close | Closer tension | Closer adjustment |
| Bar sticks in cold | Frame swelling, dry mechanism | Clean, lubricate, adjust |
| Handle loose | Fixings worked free | Refit and reinforce |
| Touchpad no longer springs | Device failure | Replace device |
The Short Version
- Most panic bar faults are alignment, not hardware.
- A non-latching exit is a fire-code and insurance issue.
- Ask to be shown why a device needs replacing.
